All I want for Christmas is... a nice new DVD collection of my favourite television shows and films, a top of the line computer console plus games, a 3D television, a waffle maker, a new touchscreen phone, a lot of chocolate goodies, a brand new laptop, and on and on.
Is this what childhood has come to? Receiving Christmas presents that serve only the purpose of encouraging laziness and inactivity?!
There are many children that struggle with obesity, depression, assorted ailments both mentally and physically, all across the UK. Many of these symptoms and problems are caused by unhealthy lifestyles that are perpetuated by the things that families buy for them. Christmas is a great big whopping excuse for children to get as many of these items as they can in order to continue living in their state of (dis)grace!
Encouraging healthy, active and interactive play amongst children is so essential to their development and growth.
This is where we come in at Wicken Toys!
This Christmas we are actively promoting the notion of healthy playtime and Christmas toys that support a child’s sense of adventure, exploration, energy and movement. Keep them active all year round with outdoor toys that reinforce their playful vigour with genuine dynamism, safety and support.
The problem with children staying in their rooms all day long whilst playing computer games, watching films and thumbing through their touchscreen phone is that they are not interacting on a person-to-person level with others and they are not getting enough exercise and fresh air. Couple this with the sugary and fatty foods that children can consume within any given day and you’ve got major problems later down the line when it comes to their energy, attitude, confidence and lifestyle choices.
Children are impressionable and can follow structured routines to the letter once they adjust to them (just look at school). With this in mind, you can help to shape your children’s playtime and their activities by giving them a guiding hand towards outdoor play equipment and social interaction with other children.
Outdoor play helps the kids to burn off those fat stores as they run about, climb, swing and jump. Trampolines, garden swings, climbing frames, wheeled toys such as tricycles and bicycles, sports and games etc. all of these things are ideal for positive play as they are for healthy action and interactions.
It is a parent’s responsibility to ensure that their child gets all of these things while at the very impressionable pre-teen age before they become too set into bad habits that only lead to a more unhealthy young adulthood.
Wicken Toys believes this Christmas can be the perfect time to get the kids out there and change their lifestyles just enough so that they aren’t always browsing the internet or playing video games all day long.
