Splits and cracks will occur in timber as it expands and contracts with humidity and temperature changes, they are more common in the round pole timbers but will be in square cut timber as well, they are in new sets as well as old. These can appear quite large and alarming, they will increase the risk of splinters. This is because timber is a natural product and is a living material.
