Know About Round Pole Wood
Round pole swing sets are made using whole tree trunks trimmed to size, rather than laminated or engineered sections. This construction method makes the poles extremely strong, durable, and well-suited to outdoor use, while retaining the natural characteristics of real timber.
Natural Timber Behaviour
Because round poles are complete tree trunks, they continue to respond to atmospheric changes and moisture levels. Timber naturally expands and contracts as conditions change. In warm, sunny weather the wood dries and shrinks; in wet or humid conditions it absorbs moisture and expands again. As a result, naturally occurring splits or shakes will appear in the poles.
These cracks are perfectly normal. They form as the wood opens up to relieve internal stresses caused by contraction when the timber is drier than it was while growing as a living tree. When moisture levels rise again, the cracks often reduce in size.
Why Cracks Don’t Affect
Strength
You will usually notice that each crack runs along part of the pole and then stops. This is a key indicator that the overall strength of the pole remains unaffected. The structural integrity comes from the full diameter and thickness of the trunk, not from an unbroken surface.
Because the poles are made from whole trunks and designed to be thick and robust, these natural splits do not compromise the
strength, durability, or safety of the swing set.
Safety Testing & Reassurance
Safety is important. Full safety testing is carried out on timber that includes the most extensive naturally occurring cracks, ensuring the product remains safe and reliable in real-world conditions.
When to Contact Us
In very rare cases, if you notice that:
- A crack runs the entire length of the beam, or
- A split goes all the way through the centre of the timber,
Please contact our technical team and include clear photographs. They will be happy to review and advise. If cracks do not run the full length or go through the centre of the beam, the strength of the pole will not be compromised.
A Natural Feature of Real Wood
Choosing round pole timber means choosing a genuine, natural material. Visual changes such as cracks, shakes, and surface variations are a normal and expected part of outdoor wooden play equipment and are fully accounted for in the design.
Understanding how round pole wood behaves helps set realistic expectations and provides reassurance that these natural characteristics are normal, safe, and part of using real timber outdoors.
