Fantastic for independent free play, in-ground trampolines can provide hours of fun.

Whether your child is a junior gymnast, likes to imagine that they're a circus acrobat, or simply wants a way to burn off energy and get some exercise outdoors, a children's trampoline could be just what they need.

Some parents may have reservations about the accessibility and safety of a kid's trampoline, or even worry that it will be an eyesore in their back garden. Though all above-ground trampolines that we stock at Wicken Toys meet safety standards, in-ground sunken trampolines are also an excellent alternative.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are in-ground trampolines safer than above-ground?

Safety is paramount when it comes to outdoor play equipment for children. Above-ground trampolines have an additional risk of falling due to their raised structure. Sunken trampolines are generally seen as safer, as a fall from a few inches above ground is less likely to cause serious injury.

With an in-ground trampoline, kids can walk directly onto or off the trampoline, avoiding falls while climbing on and off. However, always supervise children, keep the trampoline dry, and consider a safety net enclosure for added protection.

How do I install an in-ground trampoline myself?

If you prefer a DIY approach, you'll need shovels or spades and at least one helper. For a flat-ground trampoline, dig a hole slightly wider than the trampoline and deep enough for the frame.

In-ground trampolines actually need a hole smaller than the trampoline frame, as the trampoline frame will sit around the outside of the hole on top of the ground. You should dig a bowl-shaped hole, as per the trampoline manual.

Level the bottom and assemble the frame according to the product manual. Fit the structure into the hole, ensure it is level and secure, and fill any gaps with soil.

Attach any safety nets, if required, and allow at least 2 metres of clear space around the trampoline with shock-absorbing ground material like grass, sand, or bark chips.

How do I make my trampoline winterproof?

Remove safety nets and use a trampoline cover. Anchor the trampoline with trampoline anchoring kits to prevent movement in strong winds. Periodically check under the cover, remove debris, and prevent snow buildup to avoid damage.

Does sinking a trampoline into the ground affect bounce quality?

No. In-ground trampolines are designed to direct airflow so the mat isn't compressed by trapped air. Vented pads allow air to escape, reducing 'pad slap' noise and maintaining bounce quality. The frame is more stable, which can improve overall bounce compared to above-ground trampolines.

Does water build up underneath sunken trampolines?

Most in-ground trampolines have built-in drainage holes in the pads to allow water to escape. However, soil type and weather conditions can affect drainage. For high water tables or clay soil, a soak-away with gravel or a permeable membrane may be needed to prevent water pooling.

How do you clean and maintain an in-ground trampoline?

Remove loose dirt and debris, clean the mat with warm water and mild soap, then rinse and dry. Avoid detergents or solvents that can make the surface slippery. Periodically check springs, straps, and pads for wear or damage and replace any faulty parts before use. Use a weather cover for protection during long periods of inactivity.

Why choose an in-ground trampoline?

Rather than jumping on a raised platform, the sunken trampoline is level with the ground, so it's easy for kids to climb on and off, and difficult for them to fall from a height. Your child can still get that exhilarating rush, with minimal risk - and little physical or visual disruption to the landscape.

They offer a similar bouncing experience to traditional above-ground trampolines, without visually dominating the space or causing worry about accidents. You can even buy a trampoline safety net for extra security.

In-ground trampolines are specifically designed for embedding into the ground, and come with all the equipment you need to install them safely. Strong frames and retaining walls ensure that your sunken trampoline stays in place and performs well, without gathering moisture from the soil.

Finding the best trampoline

At Wicken Toys, we have small sunken trampolines available for little ones and little gardens, and large in-ground trampolines for older, more adventurous kids and more spacious gardens.

When deciding on size, choose based on the user’s age, height, and weight. Smaller models suit younger children and smaller gardens, but round sunken trampolines range from 9ft to 14ft in diameter. Rectangular, square, and oval trampolines are also available, with the largest being 17ft x 11ft 4". It's important to ensure at least 2 metres of clear space around the trampoline.

Here at Wicken Toys, we stock dozens of sunken trampoline models from BERG, the leading manufacturer of outdoor play equipment. They've been making the finest in-ground trampolines around for many years, and we're proud to work alongside them and sell their play products.

While in-ground sports trampolines are suitable for teenagers aged 14 years and above only, we do offer a variety of standard models suitable for young children aged 6 years and up. These sunken trampolines are a great way of giving your family maximum fun without taking up too much space.

BERG trampolines

The selection of sunken trampolines we supply from BERG, the expert outdoor play equipment manufacturers, is sure to include the ideal option for your garden space. We stock BERG in-ground trampolines at Wicken Toys because we're confident in their quality and longevity, so you can be, too.

The biggest advantage of BERG sunken trampolines is that they're easier to use and conceal, without dominating your outdoor space or compromising your exterior design. Only the top part of the frame protrudes from the ground, so it's simple to climb on and off during playtime.

This means that in-ground trampolines are also more accessible, allowing kids with less mobility to have fun, as well. Digging in a trampoline and adding a net makes an extra-safe place for children of all abilities to bounce around and enjoy themselves outside, encouraging independent play.

With high-quality components, including specially designed springs and vents for better airflow and a successful yet safe bounce, these BERG in-ground sunken trampolines are some of the best on the market. Don't miss your opportunity to make your child's dreams come true with a built-in trampoline for low-risk, high-reward fun and physical development at the same time.

Is an in-ground trampoline worth it?

A robust in-ground trampoline can provide many years of fun, and with proper maintenance, it can last 5–8 years or more, making it an excellent investment for your little ones.

For optimal enjoyment, we recommend teaching your little ones to bounce responsibly, check and tighten screws, and use anti-rust spray on springs. Weatherproofing with a trampoline cover is also an outstanding way to make the most of your purchase.
