Round Pole Swings

Round Pole Swings

Many of our wooden swing frames use round timber poles. These poles are made from whole tree trunks, so each one keeps its natural grain, strength, and character. Over time, you may notice small splits (called “shakes”) appearing along the surface of the wood.

This is completely natural.
As the timber seasons outdoors, it expands and contracts slightly in different weather conditions. This movement can cause surface cracks to appear - but it does not affect the strength, safety, or load-bearing ability of the frame.

In fact, round poles are often stronger than square-cut timber, because the wood fibres remain uncut and run continuously through the length of the pole.

So while the surface may develop natural character with time, the frame remains solid, stable, and designed for long-term outdoor play.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do round wooden poles develop cracks and splits?

Round poles are made from whole tree trunks. As the wood naturally adjusts to outdoor weather, it expands and contracts slightly. This movement can cause surface splits (also called shakes) to appear. This is completely normal.

Do these cracks affect the strength of the swing frame?

No. Shakes are surface-level only. The wood fibres that give the pole its strength run the full length of the timber and remain intact. The frame stays structurally strong and safe.

Are round poles stronger than square timber?

In many cases, yes. Because round poles keep the full natural grain of the wood, they retain more of their original strength. This is one reason they are commonly used in climbing frames and garden play equipment.

Do the cracks get worse over time?

Cracks can appear more or less noticeable depending on temperature and humidity. They often open in hot weather and close again in cooler, damp weather. This is just the timber breathing.

Do I need to treat or maintain the wood?

Most round poles are pressure treated for outdoor use, so they require very little maintenance. Occasional checks to remove any sharp splinters and optional wood staining can help preserve appearance, but the frame remains safe without it.
